About The Author

Detroit T. Flanagan, Jr. was raised in the Watts community of Los Angeles, California. He has been actively involved in encouraging and inspiring young people for over 25 years. He is a former Air Force Captain and a graduate of Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and a minor in Philosophy.

The Poetry To Live By® and SunSign In Rhyme® Series Bookmarks were selected 'Pick of the Shows' by NAPRA Review Magazine at Book Expo America in 1998.

His Inspirational Seminars, "Building A Winning Life", and "Poetry of Parenting" have brought him international acclaim. Detroit has twice been invited by the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DODDS) to share his unique motivational style with students, parents, teachers and the community in Okinawa, Japan during their Educator's Day Celebrations.

Detroit spent 23 years as a life insurance executive, sales trainer and manager. For three years he was Site Director for the Los Angeles Sports Academy where he supervised the activities of 216 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, 16 coaches and 6 teachers using after school athletics as an incentive to improve scholastics.

He has been married to his high school sweetheart for over 45 years. They have two successful, married daughters and six grandsons.

He is a high school teacher for a drop-out prevention program and a commercial actor and has appeared in numerous TV commercials.
